About the author

Andrew Aitken is a marine and shark research scientist. Although he was born in Namibia in 1977, he has spent most of his life in South Africa and completed his undergraduate and postgraduate studies at the University of Cape Town. He has been based at the Natal Sharks Board as an associate researcher for over two years where he has gained a wide-range of experience with sharks and the east coast marine environment. He has worked as a marine scientist for a number of organisations including the BBC and National Geographic. During his time in KwaZulu-Natal he has gained extensive experience and an inordinate fondness for the sardine run. He is currently studying 4th year veterinary science at Onderstepoort, University of Pretoria. Upon graduating in 2008 he intends to combine his veterinary science and marine research skills to enable him to continue with marine research, albeit on a part-time basis.

About the artist

Dennis Bagnall was born in Rhodesia in 1929. He spent time as a pilot in the South Rhodesian Air Force and the South African Air force between 1949 and 1985, before flying commercially until 1993. During that time he also worked as a draughtsman for a number of engineering firms. Dennis has worked as a technical illustrator since 1973 and is a member of the Institution of Engineering Designers, London, and the Association of Illustrators, London.
